At every family wedding I can remember, someone would produce a small wooden box. Inside was a piece of aged oud wood — passed from one generation to the next, lit on charcoal to perfume the house before the bride arrived. Nobody bought it. Nobody knows exactly where it came from. It simply existed, and we simply used it. That is what three generations of knowing feels like.
